Statement on Sept 12, 2024 Shooting in Newton
By Sawa: Newton-Area Alliance for Peace and Justice
A member of the Newton community was shot and injured last night in a confrontation with a demonstrator protesting in support of Israel. The members of Sawa: Newton-Area Alliance for Peace and Justice pray for full recovery of the shooting victim and the safety of all our neighbors, regardless of whether we agree or disagree on matters of politics.
We have consistently said that none of us can be safe until all of us are safe, free, and living in equality. We have said, and will continue to say, that violence is not the answer – not in Newton and not in the Middle East.
We await more details from city authorities on last night’s events. People have a right to express their anti-war or pro-Israel views without risk or threats of violence. While we do not know the person who was shot, members of our group have previously notified the police that the alleged shooter, Scott Hayes, a Framingham resident, was attending pro-Israel protests armed with a gun and acting aggressively toward anti-war protesters, here in Newton and elsewhere in Massachusetts.
Sawa: Newton-Area Alliance for Peace and Justice, a diverse group of neighbors concerned about the war’s impact locally, formed in the aftermath of the Oct 7th attack and ensuing war on Gaza. Every Newtonian deserves safety and equal protection without any regard to their political beliefs or their identity. We call on our city leaders – as we have over the past 11 months – to stand up against polarization and dehumanization of others, and create and model a civil environment so that we can discuss our differences respectfully and work together for a stronger and safer community for all.
